The descriptive text, below the map, is from the Cornish Red Data Book (2009). The map on this web page depicts the organisms distribution and shows the records made pre-2000 and those made since.

Argiope bruennichi - Orb-web Spider

Range & Status

Confined to coastal regions of Dorset, Sussex and Hampshire (including the Isle of Wight), but with isolated records from Devon and Cornwall.

Regional Distribution

Recorded in the Fal estuary in 1965 and Gweek in 1985; despite extensive searches at both of the locations no further sightings have been recorded. A single female was found in 1996 on the edge of saltmarsh at Trematon indicating that isolated individuals may be ballooning into Cornwall. Colonies of this species could become established in Cornwall.
