Cornish Red Data (2009)

The descriptive text, below the map, is from the Cornish Red Data Book (2009). The map on this web page depicts the organisms distribution and shows the records made pre-2000 and those made since.

Aplysia depilans - Sea Hare

Range & Status

A southern species found sub-littorally, in shallow water, feeding on various algae. Until recently there have been very few British records; three collections in the twentieth century, two from south Devon and a stranding of over 20 smallish specimens at Castle Beach, Falmouth in 1990 (Bebbington & Turk, 1991). From August until December 2007 an unprecedented number of large specimens were recorded along the south coast of England from the Isles of Scilly eastwards to Dorset; many of these animals spawned successfully.
