Cornish Red Data (2009)

The descriptive text, below the map, is from the Cornish Red Data Book (2009). The map on this web page depicts the organisms distribution and shows the records made pre-2000 and those made since.

Cypris bispinosus

Occurs in coastal and probably in brackish water; widely distributed around the Mediterranean basin but very rare in the British Isles where it seems to be at the northern limit of its distribution (Henderson, 1990). It is recorded from southern Ireland and the Channel Isles, but the only British Isles populations are from dune ponds at Perranporth, which are probably somewhat brackish owing to the salt content of the blown sand. Some monitoring of the populations would seem wise in relation to overgrowth of the pools.
