Usnea subscabrosa - a lichen



Range & Status

A yellow-green fruticose lichen found growing on granitic rocks and amongst low Ling Calluna vulgaris vegetation. In Britain it is so far known only from St. Agnes in the Isles of Scilly, where it is said to be locally frequent and occurs within a SSSI. Elsewhere it is found in Portugal, Macrosnesia and the eastern USA. Populations growing amongst the heather are prone to periodic heathland fires.
