Range & Status

An indigenous species which is an inhabitant of clear rivers and streams with beds of stone. A nocturnal fish that spends the daytime hidden under stones and amongst dense weed-beds. Widespread and common throughout most of Britain, except the extreme south-west and the north of Scotland. In Cornwall it seems to occur mainly in the extreme north-east with some records for mid-Cornwall.
