Velella velella - By-the-Wind-Sailor



Range & Status

A pelagic species which is occasionally blown into Cornish waters and cast up on to the shore, often in very large numbers, after prolonged periods of westerly or south-westerly winds. Most commonly found in late summer or autumn, but can be recorded in any month of the year. A dimorphic species with the left-sailing form predominant on the British coastline.
