Balanophyllia regia - The Gold & Scarlet Coral



Range & Status

Attached to rocks, preferring caves, gullies and overhangs. Occasionally found on the

shore at ELWS but more commonly in the shallow sub-littoral zone down to about 20m depth of water. This anthozoan is restricted to the extreme south-west coasts of the British Isles, Devon, Cornwall and Dyfed. Elsewhere it extends southwards to the Mediterranean, Morocco and the Canary Islands. Balanophyllia regia is protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) 1975.
