The descriptive text, below the map, is from the Cornish Red Data Book (2009). The map on this web page depicts the organisms distribution and shows the records made pre-2000 and those made since.

Callista chione - Smooth Venus

Range & Status

This species occurs on the lower shore down to 128m where it burrows in fairly clean sand, mainly in bays and estuaries. A southern species distributed northwards from Morocco to the Mediterranean, the Iberian Peninsula and south-west and western Britain. Here it occurs in Cornwall, north and west Wales and Dorset. There are several good populations on the south coast of Cornwall (VC2) and live specimens have recently been discovered on the north coast at Porthkidney and Perranporth. In this country it probably only breeds at rare intervals in hot summers.
