Range & Status

A large species with branched, spongy ' fingers' , growing on bedrock, mostly in the subtidal zone. Confined to south-western shores in Britain and the southern and western shores of Ireland. Apart from Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly it has been reported from Devon, Dorset, the Isle of Wight and Jersey in the Channel Islands. It extends south along the Atlantic coast of Europe to the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas also the northern and western coasts of Africa.
