Cornish Red Data (2009)

The descriptive text, below the map, is from the Cornish Red Data Book (2009). The map on this web page depicts the organisms distribution and shows the records made pre-2000 and those made since.

Sepia elegans - Elegant Cuttlefish

Range & Status

Found on sandy and muddy substrata offshore, uncommon in coastal waters. It is recorded mainly on the south coast of Britain, from Cornwall to the Isle of Wight, and also in the southern Irish Sea. The living animal is not often seen but its cuttlebone endo-skeleton is often found on the strandline along the north Cornish coast beaches.
